Prato is easily reachable by the A1 Milano - Napoli highway (also known as the Autostrada del sole) and the A11 Firenze - Pisa Nord highway. Prato is also well-served by state and provincial roads which connect it to Florence, Pistoia and Bologna. The state highway that connects Prato to the Province of Bologna is the SS 325 which serves all areas within the Val di Bisenzio.

Prato Ovest is situated on the A11 Florence-Pisa when arriving from the west (from Pisa, Lucca, Montecatini, Pistoia).
- Prato Est is situated on the A11 Florence-Pisa when arriving from the east (from Firenze Ovest or from the A1 at Firenze Nord).
- Calenzano is situated on the A1 Milano-Napoli and is located in the Province of Florence. When arriving from the north (from Bologna), you can get off at this exit to reach various areas of eastern and northern Prato. Otherwise, you need to turn onto the beltway going towards A11 at Firenze Nord (which is only 2 km from Calenzano) and exit at one of the toll booths at Prato Est or Ovest.
